The Vice President of the German Bundestag, Mrs. Edelgard Bulmahn, paid a working visit to Latvia on October 23rd . During her visit, Mrs. Edelgard Bulmahn met with Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Parliament, Viktors Makarovs, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Parliamentary Representatives Lolita Čigāne and Ojārs Kalniņš.
Mrs. Edelgard Bulmahn was visiting Latvia on the occasion of the finals in the International Youth Debate 2015 competition. The International Youth Debate competition is an event for young people from eight central and eastern European countries. The competition encourages critical interest in human rights and the historical development of these rights, as well as strengthening debate as a medium of political culture and democratic participation. The competition is held in German in order to promote knowledge of the German language in participating countries and to foster bilateral cultural relations.
Mrs. Edelgard Bulmahn has been a member of the German Parliament since 1987, successfully securing a direct mandate in every election without exception. She is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and has been a member of the party executive for almost 20 years. Since 2009, she has served on the Committee for Foreign Affairs and the Subcommittee for Civilian Crisis Prevention, Conflict Management and Cross-linked Action. Mrs Edelgard Bulmahn is also a founding member of the board of the Berghof Foundation for Conflict Studies.
