Asia is currently undergoing a digital transformation, with smartphones usage, internet connectivity and online news consumption rapidly developing. While new digital technologies provide ample opportunities for development, the region has also seen significant decline in media freedom in many countries, and disinformation and manipulation of online infrastructure have become entrenched challenges.

  • What are the dynamics of the Asian information environment?
  • What are some Asian experiences with disinformation and how are countries approaching these challenges?
  • What are the larger effects of the Asian disinformation ecosystem on an international level?

These questions, and more, were raised in the next NATO StratCom COE webinar where we invited leading experts to discuss current issues and affairs within the realm of strategic communication.

During the webinar, Prof. Jonathan Corpus Ong will also presented the findings of a new and exciting NATO Stratcom COE study titled “Mitigating Disinformation in Southeast Asian Elections: Lessons from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand” which is soon to be released.

Speakers:

  • Prof. Jonathan Corpus Ong, Associate Professor of Digital Media, University of Massachusetts-Amherst
  • Dr. Gulizar Haciyakupoglu, Research Fellow at the Centre of Excellence for National Security, S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies
  • Dr. Jakob Wallis, Senior Analyst, Australian Strategy Policy Institute

Moderated by Ms. Monika Hanley, Fulbright Scholar, NATO StratCom COE.
